Il Principe Andrea Baldini vola a La Franqui testando le CHS Aero 2016 … mentre a Gruissan c’è la Defi.
Dopo qualche mese di sviluppo la Challenger esce allo scoperto con alcuni prototipi 2016 nelle misure da Speed: dalla 7.0 alla 5.0.
RIW: Ciao Principe, a che punto e’ lo sviluppo delle Aero 2016?
P: Un saluto a tutti i lettori di RIWmag! Direi a un ottimo punto … vista da dietro quasi mi commuove 😉 !
RIW: Cosa è cambiato?
P: lo scorso anno i rider CHS chiedevano di ampliare il range in soprainvelatura delle vele piccole … allora sono state fatte alcune modifiche per aumentare range e stabilità.
Siamo partiti dalla 5.4 di cui abbiamo fatto 4 prototipi con cambiamenti millimetrici ogni volta. Abbiamo chiuso leggermente la seconda e la terza stecca sopra il boma che comunque, come nella nostra filosofia, non saranno mai completamente chiuse. Poi abbiamo ridotto leggermente il grasso della stecca di base e di quella che attraversa il boma.
RIW: Com’è il feeling adesso?
P: la vela è più leggera, più stabile e più veloce … la mia preferita è la 5.8 handcrafted!
L’ho fatta provare a Giorgio Giorgi abbinata al mitico Mistral 41 ed è rimasto con un sorriso stampato per diverso tempo! Dopo pochi run ha strappato 42,76kts con 41kts su 10 secondi! Non male per la prima uscita speed ;-)
RIW: Quindi sei stato un buon coach … e soprattutto hai lavorato bene sulla vela?
P: no no 😉 … Giorgio è fisicamente e mentalmente portato per lo speed!
RIW: Riguardo agli alberi?
P: nello speed tutto è portato all’estremo quindi gli alberi devono rispondere alla perfezione … Vivi e progressivi.
A tal proposito abbiamo realizzato due misure di alberi che pensavamo di mettere in produzione come linea speciale speed (o da slalom per vento forte) … Ma di questo magari ne parleremo più approfonditamente in un’altra occasione! Per ora posso dire che i miei 380 e 400 vanno molto bene!
RIW: C’è stato vento forte durante la Defi … la gara un giorno è stata annullata … com’era la condizione a La Franqui?
P: A La Franqui ci sono normalmente 10 nodi in più, quando è forte …
Anche a La Franqui è stata dura … una mattina ha suonato fino a 70kts e non è stato possibile navigare … per il resto abbiamo avuto modo di mettere alla prova l’attrezzatura in condizioni dure!
RIW: Tu sei stato a vedere la Defi?
P: Certo ed è stato molto divertente … ho rivisto decine di amici con cui per anni ho gareggiato in Coppa del Mondo e che per un motivo o un altro non incontravo più … come il grandissimo Finian che mi ha detto di essersi divertito dopo un ottimo 4° posto nella heat appena conclusasi!
Comunque assistere a quello spettacolo incredibile che è la partenza in flotta di tutti quei windsurf è una bella sensazione … per una volta senza la frenesia della partecipazione alla gara!!!
Devo dire che ci vuole una buona dose di fortuna ed esperienza per indovinare l’attrezzatura e la partenza poiché le condizioni possono cambiare durante la regata … Julien Quentel ha fatto tutte e 4 le prove con la vela wave … L’esperienza è fondamentale: non a caso i locals Mortefon, Waremburg e Moretti hanno chiuso nei primi 6 … spesso davanti a nomi pesanti come Albeau, Maynard, Dunkerbeck, Bringdal, Moussilmani, Van Der Steen etc … ! Se poi non si parte a largo con i primi diventa un trionfo di incroci nelle retrovie 😉
Mi ha fatto piacere vedere che il mio amico Tine Slabe sempre simpatico e sorridente, con i suoi occhiali “Different”, (qui in foto insieme a me, con Bjorn Dunkerbeck sullo sfondo) ha fatto un ottimo 17° in una heat difficile sempre motorizzato CHS!!!
RIW: Bene, torniamo allo speed e alle CHS 2016. Quali altre vele hai provato?
P: 5.0, 5.4, 6.2 e 7.0 . Ecco sulla 7 mi vorrei soffermare … 4 bordi con la 7 tutti tra 39,5 e 40,2kts: super soddisfatto!!!
Non ho mai faticato e mi sono divertito!!! Ora Andrea Ferin (detto Mac Gyver 😉 ) insieme al Sail Designer Claudio Badiali, sta lavorando molto su alberi e vele più grandi … Sono certo si andrà ancora a migliorare un prodotto ormai già di altissimo livello!!!

Prince Andrea Baldini was flying at La Franqui while testing the new CHS Aero 2016 … while at Gruissan there was the Defi. After a few months of development Challenger Sails comes out with some prototypes 2016 on the speed sizes from 7.0 to 5.0.
RIW: Hello Prince, where did you get with the development of the Aero 2016?
P: Greetings to all RIWmag readers! I would say at a great point … whatching the leech from the back … I could almost cry for the emotion ;-)!
RIW: What has been changed?
P: Last year the CHS riders asked for expanding the usage range of the small sizes, therefore in order to sail more comfortable in overpowered conditions there were made some changes to increase range and stability. We started from the 5.4, we made 4 prototypes with small changes of millimetres every time. We closed slightly the second and third battens above the boom that however, as in our philosophy, will never be completely closed. Then we have slightly reduced the profile on the lower batten and on the batten that crosses the boom.
RIW: How do you feel the sail now?
P: It is lighter, more stable and faster … my favourite one is the 5.8 handcrafted! I let Giorgio Giorgi to try it together with the legendary Mistral 41 … He remain stocked and with a long lasting smile! After few runs he smashed 42,76kts with 41kts in 10 seconds! Not bad for his first speed session 😉
RIW: So were you a good coach … and did you work super well on the rig?
P: No no … ☺ Giorgio is physically and mentally made for speed sailing!
RIW: What about the Mast?
P: Within speed sailing everything is taken to the extreme so the mast must reach the perfection … it has to be Alive and progressive. That’s why we did two sizes of Mast that we are thinking to put in production as a special LTD speed-line (good as well for slalom in strong winds) … But maybe we’ll talk about that soon … Next time! For now I can say that my 380 and 400 are very good!
RIW: There was strong wind during the Defi … the race was cancelled one day … How was at La Franqui?
P: At La Franqui there are usually 10 knots more, when it is strong … Also at La Franqui it was tough … One morning it was smoking at 70kts and it was not possible to sail for few hours … Anyway we had the possibility to test the equipment in hard conditions!
RIW: Have you been to see the Defi?
P: Of course, and it was great fun … I saw dozens of friends of the Speed World Cup that for one reason or another I didn’t meet for a while … like the great Finian who told me he had fun after a great 4th place in the heat he had just ended! However the departure of the fleet with all those sailboards is an amazing spectacle … for once without the “hurry” of the race!!!
For the Defi you need a good training, good experience and some good luck as well! It’s crazy important to guess the right equipment and to do a good start … because conditions can change during the race… Julien Quentel made the race with a wave sail …
The experience is crucial: it’s not a case that the Locals Mortefon, Waremburg and Moretti have finished in the top 6 … often in front of big names like Albeau, Maynard, Dunkerbeck, Bringdal, Moussilmani, Van Der Steen etc …!
If you do not start well … after it will be a mess☺
I was happy to see that my friend Tine Slabe, always nice and smiling with his glasses “Different”, did a great 17th in a tough heat, with his CHS!!!
RIW: Well, back to the speed and the CHS 2016, which other sails did you try?
P: 5.0, 5.4, 6.2 and 7.0. I was stocked by the 7.0 … I had 4 runs between 39.5 and 40,2kts: super happy!!! I really enjoyed it!!! Now Andrea Ferin (Mr. MacGyver ☺) together with The CHS Sail Designer Claudio Badiali, is working hard on the bigger mast and sails … I am sure it will come a great job!!!
