English version follows – Umile, riservato, stiloso e polivalente, semplicemente il campione del mondo wave in carica, Thomas Traversa (GA Sails, Tabou Boards, Pat Love, Quiksilver, Nautix). Riwmag lo ha intervistato per fare insieme a lui il bilancio 2014 e delineare le prospettive 2015.
RIW: Qual’è stato il momento più difficile della scorsa stagione 2014?
T.T.: Il momento più duro è sempre il primo evento a Gran Canaria, specialmente quando le condizioni non sono proprio eccellenti come è accaduto negli ultimi due anni, questo spesso causa un pò di tensione.
Combattere per il podio contro Victor a Tenerife, in Danimarca ed a Maui … sapevo che non sarebbe stata una passeggiata, il momento che ricordo più difficile fu l’attesa della double elimination a Maui, in quei momenti avverti che qualunque cosa può accadere quando c’e’ in gioco il titolo mondiale.
RIW: Quale e’ stato il momento più bello della scorsa stagione 2014?
T.T.: In realtà i momenti belli ed intensi sono stati diversi, sopratutti quelli finali. Non saprei sceglierne uno in particolare ma finire al secondo posto all’Aloha Classic sicuramente è stato un buon modo di terminare la stagione.
RIW: Quest’anno hai conquistato il titolo mondiale Wave, quali sono stati i fattori che rispetto al passato, hanno contribuito alla realizzazione di questo sogno?
T.T.: Sicuramente l’incognita e la diversità delle condizioni incontrate ha giocato un ruolo determinante. Abbiamo avuto due eventi mure a dritta, uno on-shore in Danimarca e 2 mure a sinistra tra Pozo e Tenerife. La mia preparazione in entrambe le mura ha permesso di dare il massimo in tutti gli eventi e di decretare un leggero vantaggio rispetto a quei riders che sono più specializzati da un lato piuttosto che dall’altro. La vittoria allo Storm Chase nel periodo iniziale della stagiona ha anche contribuito a darmi la serenità e la concentrazione necessaria per affrontare il resto della stagione. Diciamo che la fortuna è stata dalla mia parte e questo è molto importante quando devi affrontare un anno pieno di eventi con date vicine e con un cosi’ alto livello di competitività … dove vincere o perdere rimane sempre un’incognita fino all’ultimo secondo.
RIW: Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per il 2015?
T.T.: Gli stessi di sempre, rientrare nei primi Top8, spero di riuscire ad ottenere ottimi risultati … ma so già che non sarà affatto semplice, ci sono 5/6 ragazzi pronti a contendersi il titolo mondiale wave (Victor/Ricardo/Brawzinho/Musso/Koster/Stone) e credo questo sia uno stimolo in più per poter dare il meglio di me stesso.
RIW: Quali sono attualmente i tuoi punti di forza e quali, invece, quelli che hai in mente di migliorare?
T.T.: Comincio ad avere abbastanza esperienza in gara da poter gestire nel migliore dei modi sia i miei allenamenti che le heats, ho delle tavole fantastiche e delle vele molto performanti, tutto questo mi permette nel totale di ottimizzare il mio tempo in acqua. Vorrei migliorare il dooble loop e qualche manovra freestyle per Pozo e soprattutto riuscire a dare ancora di più di quello che normalmente riesco a dare.
RIW: A breve diventarai padre. Come pensi che questa fase della tua vita possa cambiare la tua carriera windsurfistica?
T.T.: Non sono del tutto sicuro che questo cambierà la mia carriera windsurfistica, quello che posso dire è che oggi sono felicissimo di questa new entry nella mia famiglia!

RIW: Which was the more difficult moment of the 2014 season?
T.T.: The hardest moment of the season is always the 1st event in Gran Canaria, specially when the conditions are very very bad like it has been the last 2 years. It is a lot of pressure. Fighting for podium finishes against Victor in Tenerife, Denmark and then Maui was obviously tough, the hardest for my nerves being when i had to wait for the double elimination in Maui, everything was still possible for the title.
RIW: Which was the more beautiful moment of the 2014 season?
T.T.: There were many beautiful moments, I think all the finals were great moments! I cannot chose one, but taking 2nd place at the Aloha Classic was a near perfect ending for the year!
RIW: This year you won your first world wave title. Which were the factors which made that possible now and not before?
T.T.: The diversity of conditions played a big role this year, we had 2 events starboard tack, one onshore in Denmark and 2 port tack events in Pozo and Tenerife. This was very important for me because I am pretty consistent in all kind of conditions, so I actually knew I had a chance to do good on the overall compared to some guys who are very specialized. Winning the Storm Chase earlier in the year also helped me to be relax and just focus on my sailing. And the luck was on my side I guess, it is something which is always important when you have 4 or 5 events and there are some very close heats that you can win or lose.
RIW: Which are your objectives for 2015?
T.T.: Same as before, finishing in the top 8 PWA would be great, and hopefully I can get some good results on my way, we will see. I think there are at least 5 or 6 guys who can really become world champion ( Victor / Ricardo / Brawzinho / Musso / Koster / Stone ) so it should be an exciting season again.
RIW: What are currently your strengths and which points to improve?
T.T.: I start to have a lot of competition experience, i have good boards, good sails, I know more or less what I can do depending on the conditions so I can sail at my best level most of the time. I should improve my double loops and my freestyle moves for Pozo. And get better at what I am usually doing.
RIW: Shortly you are going to get father. How do you think this event will change your windsurfing professional career?
T.T.: I am not sure if the baby will change much for my career, we will see! At the moment I am just excited to see this becoming real!
