English version follows – Kiri Thode (GA Sails, Starboard, Tur Tur by Bogoro, Choco Fins) è senza dubbio uno dei freestyler più stilosi degli ultimi tempi, la sua costanza ed il paradiso di “Bonaire” lo hanno portato alla conquista del titolo mondiale 2013 di freestyle. Riwmag lo ha intervistato per fare insieme a lui il bilancio 2014 e delineare le prospettive 2015.
RIW: Qual’è stato il momento più difficile che hai vissuto nella stagione 2014?
K.T.: Il momento più difficile della scorsa stagione lo ricollego sicuramente a quando persi a Sylt la mia heat più importante.Le condizioni non mi furono d’aiuto, il vento incostante non permise lo svolgimento della double elimination e vidi sfumare la speranza di una possibile rimonta. Ma a volte le cose vanno come devono andare ed anche questo fa parte della competizione.
RIW: Qual’è stato il momento più bello della stagione 2014??
K.T.: Il ricordo più intenso che ho della scorsa stagione lo riconduco all’evento di Bonaire. Vedere tutti quei riders nel mio home spot battersi per il titolo mondiale, nel mio home spot davanti alla mia gente, per me sono stati momenti di grande gratificazione.
RIW: Negli ultimi anni tu e Steven Van Broeckhoven siete riusciti entrambi a battere Gollito Estredo, ed attualmente siete gli unici, oltre a lui, ad aver portato a casa il titolo mondiale di freestyle. In un’ipotetica veste di giudice del PWA, cosa diresti se ti chiedessero di esprimere un giudizio sui top 3 freestylers del momento: Kiri, Steven e Gollito?
K.T.: Si è vero, nelle ultime stagioni io, Gollito e Steven ci siamo battuti tanto per la conquista del titolo. Puo’ succedere davvero di tutto quando si arriva tra i primo top 3! Mi chiedete se fossi un giudice del PWA che giudizio darei a questi tre talenti? Beh direi che Steven ha un sailing molto potente ed è in grado di chiudere le manovre più difficili anche nelle condizioni più hard. Gollito è sempre in formissima ed il suo stile inconfondibile non lascia spazio a nessun errore permettendogli di concludere big air moves in perfetta planata contro ogni aspettativa. Kiri ha un uno stile tutto suo, guardandolo surfare dà l’impressione di danzare sull’acqua, le sue manovre sono fatte con cosi’ tanta armonia da sembrare la cosa più semplice del mondo.
Fisicamente ognuno di questi atleti ha una sua caratteristica portante, la peculiarità di Kiri è di essere più agile e di sfruttare la sua leggerezza a suo vantaggio, basta guardare qualche minuto dei suoi video per capire di cosa sto parlando.
RIW: Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per la stagione 2015?
K.T.: Direi che la mia attenzione sarà dedicata a partecipare a tutte le tappe del PWA freestyle e a qualche altra gara locale di slalom/freestyle in Aruba, Curacao e Bonaire. Ma l’obiettivo più importante rimarrà quello di riconquistare il titolo mondiale, so che sarà difficile come sempre, ma sono abbastanza pronto e concentrato … per questo non vedo l’ora di tornare in acqua!!!
RIW: Bonaire rappresenta il tuo home spot, grazie alle competizioni del PWA hai avuto modo di surfare negli spots più belli del mondo. Cosa credi che ci sia in Bonaire che non potrai mai trovare negli altri spot e viceversa? Credi che in altri spot ci sia qualcosa che a Bonaire manca?
K.T.: Bonaire ai miei occhi è un posto più unico che raro, il colore dell’acqua cristallina ed i suoi bassi fondali lo rendono paradisiaco. Per la pratica del freestyle è perfetto, ci si deve solo abituare ad usare vele un pò più grandi come la 5.2 che io uso spesso. Il vento più leggero aiuta ad aumentare la sensibilità ed il proprio timing, a mantenere la planate anche in condizioni limite. E’ un posto dove si apprende in fretta, dove anche solo dopo 5 giorni noti miglioramenti a differenza di altri spots dove il mare non sempre è cosi piatto o il vento cosi costante. Ma non importa: io amo questo sport e noi siamo professionisti, quindi dobbiamo essere in grado di navigare ed essere competitivi in qualsiasi condizione!
English version – Kiri Thode (GA Sails, Starboard, Tur Tur by Bogoro, Choco Fins) is undoubtedly one of the most stylish freestyler of recent times, his constancy and the paradise of “Bonaire” led him to win the world title in 2013 freestyle. RIWmag interviewed him to take with him the 2014 evaluation and to outline the prospects in 2015.
RIW: Which was the more difficult moment of the 2014 season?
K.T.: The most difficult moments for me was in Sylt when I lost just the heat. That was the most important one but the fact was also that there was no wind for the double elimination so I could had a chance to climb back but sometimes you gotta deal with it, that’s competition.
RIW: Which was the more beautiful moment of the 2014 season?
K.T.: The most beautiful moment of 2014 was I think in Bonaire, the whole event was amazing having all the pros competing at my home spot and was so amazing to watch all of the other riders ripping at my home spot. For me that was the most beautiful moment.
RIW: In the last years you and Steven Van Broeckhoven have been between the few ones able to win against Gollito Estredo and actually the only ones to win the Freestyle World Title beside him. Imagine to be a PWA judge asked to talk about the actual top 3 freestyle riders: what would you say about Kiri, Steven and Gollito?
K.T.: Yes that’s true, in the past years Gollito Steven and I have been challenging each other a lot. It’s crazy that anything can happen when it get to top 3. I would say Steven has a powerful sailing, very strong guy and able to do any big trick at any moment. Gollito he has always that fire going that he can do tricks in heats when you can never think about. He is capable to do big air move with no risk. Kiri the way he sails every tricks seems to look so easy but still it’s so difficult to do. He can be able to do heats after heats without crashing any moves using lot of skills. I think about myself that if you see clearly that Steven and Gollito are bigger and maybe stronger of course, but I think I use the nature wind and chops to pop so high in even flat water places, that’s what I think is the unique style that I have.
RIW: Which are your objectives for 2015?
K.T.: My plans for 2015 are to do all the PWA freestyle stops and some local slalom/freestyle that we have in Aruba curacao and Bonaire. But the most important one is to get the title back. It will be hard as always but I know what to do to get in that spot. I am ready and focused for it, can’t wait to hit the tour again!!!
RIW: You come from Bonaire and thanks to your PWA competitions you got used to travel around the top freestyle spots in the world. In your eyes what does Bonaire have which you like and is missing in the other spots and what is missing in Bonaire which you can find and like in the other spots?
K.T.: Bonaire is on my eyes unique, where the spot is knee deep shallow water most of the time there is wind, the nature and clear blue water. For training freestyle is perfect, you will have to get used with bigger gears like 5.2 which on tour we don’t use al lot. But I also think that in Bonaire you really need good timing and speed to be able to go big cause here you using big set and you don’t want to duck the sail and loose speed so you gotta be fast and quick and ready to go full power, and also you have many local other sailor that are ripping, so you never stop pushing the limits. Everyday you keep learning things, it’s just awesome. In Bonaire people learn so quick that you even see in 5 days already their progress, it is just awesome. In other tour stop you don’t find constant wind and pretty flatwater and calm chops, on tour there’s always windy choppy and shifty wind so it’s not what we have at home, but for me it doesn’t matter: I’m just loving this sport and I am happy with any condition! We are professional so we gotta be able to sail in any condition we have.
