Nel mondo dei water board sports RIWmag ha gia’ osservato questa dinamica nei decenni precedenti: un nuovo sport arriva e crea degli aggiustamenti nelle scelte dei praticanti e di conseguenza nelle fette di mercato a disposizione.
L’arrivo del Kiteboard aveva creato una vera e propria scissione con il mondo del Windsurf.
Dopo un periodo ibrido in cui alcuni sportivi hanno cercato di praticare entrambe le discipline, molti praticanti in cerca di nuove sensazioni sono passati all’uso dell’aquilone.
Grazie alla sua curva di apprendimento piu’ veloce e semplice il Kite ha anche portato nuovi praticanti nel bacino dei clienti delle aziende di settore, ma di fatto ha creato uno spostamento importante di risorse economiche dal mondo del Windsurf a quello del Kite.
Anni dopo, l’arrivo del SUP da un punto di vista di pratica sportiva non ha introdotto un nuovo settore in competizione contro il Windsurf e il Kite, proponendo invece un supporto di tavola complementare e indipendente dal vento.
I forti investimenti in questo nuovo segmento pero’ hanno attirato per lo meno diversi atleti professionisti dal mondo del windsurf che hanno trovato nel SUP un nuovo eldorado agonistico, essendo le risorse agonistiche professionali del mondo del Windsurf in continua contrazione.
Intanto uno sviluppo, per non parlare di una vera e propria rivoluzione trasversale, stava avanzando nelle diverse discipline esistenti: quella del foil.
In questo i cugini kiters sono stati alquanto all’avanguardia, ma nel giro di poco il foil e’ stato applicato a tutti i water board sports fino ad arrivare a creare delle nuove classi competitive nel mondo della vela, compresa la Coppa America.
Se all’inizio sembrava un “semplice” nuovo supporto alternativo alle classiche pinne e derive, successivamente il foil si e’ rivelato proprio l’anello che mancava per l’arrivo sul mercato di una nuova disciplina, il Wing Foil.
Dopo un breve periodo iniziale di scetticismo, oggi il Wing Foil e’ diventato una nuova attivita’ alla moda che sta richiamando molti praticanti dalle altre discipline, ma anche nuovi praticanti grazie all’apparente fascino di poter essere imparato in modo relativamente semplice e veloce.
L’ala gonfiabile, la mancanza dell’ingombro dei lunghi cavi del Kite, le dimensioni contenute della tavola e il foil scomponibile permette una logistica molto piu’ semplice sia nel trasporto che nella pratica.
Il primo sport ad essere cannibalizzato dal Wing Foil e’ stato il Kite grazie alle forti similitudini da cui sono stati ridotti molti limiti e inconvenienti: minore pericolisita’, controllo piu’ diretto dell’ala e minore ingombro per tutto quello che riguarda l’assenza dei lunghi cavi.
Anche il SUP e’ stato parzialmente cannibalizzato dal Wing Foil: tolti gli appassionati dell’attivita’ di endurance, il Wing Foil e’ decisamente piu’ divertente e meno faticoso.
Il Windsurf teoricamente non sarebbe dovuto rimanere implicato negativamente dall’arrivo del Wing Foil, anzi: le condizioni ideali di pratica decisamente differenti sia per quanto riguarda lo specchio d’acqua che per quanto riguarda l’intensita’ del vento della nuova ala avrebbero invece dovuto essere perfettamente complementari con la pratica dell’ormai “vecchia” tavola a vela … ma invece …
Molti windsurfisti, attirati dal poter ampliare il range di vento in cui divertirsi e dalla possibilita’ di riuscire a planare piu’ spesso, riducendo drasticamente i viaggi e le traferte concluse senza planata, e considerata anche la facilita’ di apprendimento di questa nuova disciplina, hanno deciso di investire nei materiali del Wing Foil.
Quindi, in realta’, il bacino di utenza dei praticanti amatoriali del Windsurf non e’ diminuito, ma e’ diminuito drasticamente il volume delle vendite dei materiali della tavola a vela, sia nel mercato del nuovo che in quello dell’usato, poiche’ in una economia globale in evidente contrazione in cui tutti i costi sono aumentati (materie prime, produzione, energia, trasporto), il windsurfista medio che ha voluto tentare questa nuova avventura ha dovuto dirottare verso il Wing Foil in parte o tutto il budget che in passato riservava per il Windsurf.
E cosi’ dopo un periodo difficile per il mercato della tavola a vela a causa delle restrizioni legate alla pandemia del Covid (2020 e 2021) ed un anno di incredibile ripresa (2022) il 2023 si rivela nuovamente difficile a causa delle vendite al di sotto delle aspettative.
Inoltre, come visto gia’ in passato per gli atleti professionisti, anche il Wing Foil ha tolto al mondo del Windsurf una fetta importante di agonisti, soprattutto tra le promesse ed i piu’ giovani, attirati nel nuovo sport da budget piu’ importanti a disposizione e grazie alla facilita’ di poter riconvertire le loro precedenti esperienze agonistiche.

RIWmag si e’ allora rivolta agli addetti di settore per porre loro alcune domande sul presente e sul futuro del Windsurf e del Wing Foil.

Sei d’accordo con questa ricostruzione di RIWmag? Se non sei d’accordo puoi riassumere le differenze rispetto alla tua ricostruzione?

R.J.: Questo è un riassunto abbastanza ben documentato della situazione attuale.

Craig Gertenbach, responsabile vendite della divisione Wing Foiling: in realtà i windsurfisti sono stati di gran lunga il primo gruppo a dedicarsi al Winging, per il kite ha richiesto molto più tempo e solo quando il Winging ha iniziato a sembrare più spettacolare/vicino al kite in termini di salti, ecc.

Come sta affrontando l’industria del Windsurf la sfida rappresentata dal crescente successo del Wing Foil? Quali strategie si possono adottare per mantenere o aumentare la quota di mercato del windsurf?

R.J.: Come avete affermato a proposito di quando il Kiting è entrato in scena, perderemo alcuni clienti a causa del Winging. Quindi ci aspettiamo che il mercato del Windsurf si riduca nuovamente. Ma come quando è nato il Kiting, non tutti i marchi/aziende di Windsurf avevano le risorse per avere ancora un team dedicato che spingesse avanti la propria divisione Windsurf. O in altre parole alcuni dei (ex) marchi di Windsurf hanno perso il focus. Ciò ha quindi aperto la porta ai marchi focalizzati per guadagnare quote di mercato. In Duotone la nostra filosofia è sempre stata quella di avere divisioni separate e completamente dedicate per tutti gli sport. Ciò significa che quando è apparso un nuovo sport abbiamo sempre creato una divisione senza spostare risorse/manodopera dagli altri sport. Siamo abbastanza certi che questo sia uno dei motivi principali per cui siamo leader di mercato con Duotone in tutti e tre gli sport.

Quali iniziative servono per promuovere e garantire opportunità competitive per gli atleti del windsurf?

R.J.: Il windsurf offre ancora la più vasta gamma di competizioni tra tutti e tre gli sport, dal Wave al Freestyle fino al Racing. E con l’arrivo del foil nelle regate anche i limiti del vento non sono più un problema per garantire risultati agli eventi e azioni spettacolari. Quindi sì, al momento la scena agonistica si trova in una situazione difficile come l’intero sport del Windsurf. Ma guardando al futuro, penso che avremo una base fantastica per il nostro sport una volta che lo slancio del primo Wing si sarà placato e la crisi economica e le scorte in eccesso saranno superate.

Quali opportunità possono emergere dalla coesistenza del Windsurf e del Wing Foil sullo stesso mercato?

R.J.: Come avete menzionato nel vostro articolo Wing e Windsurf possono avere un’ottima convivenza. Lo abbiamo potuto constatare perfettamente durante il nostro incontro annuale con i distributori/rivenditori quest’estate a Tarifa. Nei giorni con condizioni marginali tutti i rivenditori, gli importatori e il nostro personale erano fuori con i Wings. Ma non appena ci sono state le condizioni adeguate da 5.7, tutti si sono lanciati sul Windsurf. Perché non appena non ci sono condizioni “stop and go”, il windsurf è ancora il più grande wind sport sulla terra.

In the world of water board sports RIWmag has already observed this dynamic in previous decades: a new sport arrives and creates adjustments in the choices of the riders and consequently in the market shares available.
The arrival of the Kiteboard had created a real split with the world of Windsurfing.
After a hybrid period in which some athletes tried to practice both disciplines, many riders in search of new sensations have switched to the use of kites.
Thanks to its faster and simpler learning curve, Kite has also brought new practitioners into the customer base of companies in the sector, but in fact it has created an important shift of economic resources from the world of Windsurfing to that of Kite.
Years later, the arrival of the SUP from a sporting point of view did not introduce a new sector competing against Windsurfing and Kite, instead proposing a complementary board support independent of the wind.
The strong investments in this new segment, however, have attracted at least several professional athletes from the world of Windsurfing who have found a new competitive Eldorado in SUP, as the professional competitive resources of the windsurfing world are continually shrinking.
Meanwhile, a development, not to mention a true transversal revolution, was advancing in the various existing disciplines: that of foil.
In this the kiter cousins were somewhat at the forefront, but within a short time the foil was applied to all water board sports to the point of creating new competitive classes in the world of sailing, including the America’s Cup.
If at the beginning it seemed like a “simple” new alternative support to the classic fins and dinghies, subsequently the foil proved to be precisely the link that was missing for the arrival on the market of a new discipline, the Wing Foil.
After a brief initial period of skepticism, today Wing Foil has become a new trendy activity that is attracting many riders from other disciplines, but also new practitioners thanks to the apparent charm of being able to be learned in a relatively simple and quick way.
The inflatable wing, the lack of the bulk of the Kite’s long cables, the small dimensions of the board and the decomposable foil allow for much simpler logistics both in transport and in practice.
The first sport to be cannibalized by the Wing Foil was Kite thanks to the strong similarities from which many limits and inconveniences were reduced: less danger, more direct control of the wing and less bulk due to everything related to the absent long cables.
Even the SUP has been partially cannibalized by the Wing Foil: apart from endurance enthusiasts, the Wing Foil is definitely more fun and less tiring.
Windsurfing theoretically should not have been negatively implicated by the arrival of the Wing Foil, on the contrary: the decidedly different ideal conditions of practice both as regards the water plan and the intensity of the wind of the new wing should have instead be perfectly complementary with the practice of the now “old” windsailing board … but instead …
Many windsurfers, attracted by the possibility of expanding the wind range in which to have fun and by the possibility of being able to plan more often, drastically reducing trips completed without planing, and also considering the ease of learning this new discipline, they decided to invest in Wing Foil materials.
So, in reality, the catchment area of amateur windsurfers has not decreased, but the volume of sales of windsurfing materials has drastically decreased, both in the new and used markets, since in a global economy in evident contraction in which all costs have increased (raw materials, production, energy, transport), the average windsurfer who wanted to attempt this new adventure has had to divert part or all of the budget that in past reserved for Windsurfing.
And so after a difficult period for the windsurf market due to the restrictions linked to the Covid pandemic (2020 and 2021) and a year of incredible recovery (2022), 2023 proves to be difficult again due to sales below of expectations.
Furthermore, as seen in the past for professional athletes, Wing Foil has also taken away an important portion of athletes from the world of Windsurfing, especially among the promising and younger ones, attracted to the new sport by the more important budgets available and thanks to the ease of being able to reconvert their previous competitive experiences.

RIWmag then turned to industry insiders to ask them some questions about the present and future of Windsurfing and Wing Foiling.

Do you agree with this reconstruction by RIWmag? If you do not agree, can you summarize the differences with respect to your reconstruction?

R.J.: That is a pretty well researched summary of the current situation.

Craig Gertenbach, responsabile vendite della divisione Wing Foiling: actually the windsurfers were by far the first group to go to winging. Kiting took a lot longer and only once the sport started to look more spectacular/closer to kiting in terms of jumping etc.

How is the Windsurfing industry addressing the challenge posed by the growing success of the Wing Foil? What strategies can be adopted to maintain or increase windsurfing market share?

R.J.: As you stated same as when Kiting entered the scene we will lose some customers to Winging. So we expect the WS market to shrink again. But same as when Kiting came up not all the Windsurf brand/company had the resources to still have a dedicated team pushing their Windsurf division forward. Or in other words some of the (former) Windsurf brands have lost their focus. This then opened the door for the focused brands to gain market shares. At Duotone our philosophy has always been to have separate and fully dedicated divisions for all every sports. Means when a new sport popped up we have always created a division without shifting resources/manpower from the other sports. We are quite certain that this is one of the major reasons why we are market leader with Duotone in all three sports.

What initiatives are needed to promote and guarantee competitive opportunities for windsurfing athletes?

R.J.: Windsurfing still offers the biggest range of competition of all the three sports from Wave through Freestyle up to Racing. And with the arrival of the foil in racing even wind limits are not any issue anymore to guarantee event results and spectacular action. So yes at the moment the competition scene is in a difficult situation like the whole WS sport. But looking forward I think we have a fantastic base for our sport once the first Wing hype is settled and economy crisis and overstocks have overcome.

What opportunities can emerge from the coexistence of Windsurfing and Wing Foil on the same market?

R.J.: As you mentioned in your article Wing and Windsurfing can have a great coexistence. We could perfectly see this during our annual distributor/dealing meeting this summer in Tarifa. On days with marginal conditions all dealers, importers and our own staff were out on Wings. But as soon as there were proper 5.7 conditions everyone was out on the Windsurf stuff. Cause as soon as it’s not „stop and go“ conditions, Windsurfing is still the greatest wind sport on earth.
