Non c’e’ dubbio, Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, North Sails, Ion, MFC) e’ riconosciuto da tutti come uno dei wave riders piu’ regolari e consistenti.
Ma non sono solo i suoi risultati che colpiscono quando si ha la fortuna di incontrarlo e conoscerlo di persona ma anche la sua umilta’ e solida serenita’.
RIWmag lo ha raggiunto per tracciare insieme a lui il bilancio del 2014 e le prospettive del 2015.
RIW: Qual è stato il momento più difficile della stagione 2014?
V.F.: Il 2014 è stato un grande anno per me, penso che sia stata una dei migliori anni da quando sto nel PWA World Tour. Forse il momento più difficile nel 2014 e’ stato a La Torche dove sono andato molto prima della gara per allenarmi perche’ volevo un buon risultato. Ho perso i quarti di finale in una heat molto vicina nei punti contro Robby Swift. In quella heat in realta’ ho navigato bene completando un buon doppio forward e un paio di surfate, ma non sono stato abbastanza soddisfatto e sapevo che mi mancava qualcosina nel mio wave riding. Il resto della stagione è andato alla grande e ho fatto del mio meglio, quindi ne sono felice in generale.
RIW: Qual è stato il più bel momento della stagione 2014?
V.F.: Penso che sia stato quando ho vinto Pozo Izquierdo per la 5° volta nella mia carriera, anche essere finito nella top4 del PWA Aloha Classic.
RIW: Nel 2014 sei stato uno dei riders favoriti per la conquista del titolo wave PWA. Finalmente hai concluso secondo. Da allora hai sempre speso parole positive su questo risultato. Non hai davvero avuto un senso di delusione?
V.F.: Ho sentito un po’ delusione perché mi piace vincere come a tutti i riders PWA! Ci dobbiamo allenare molto per mettere le nostre migliori manovre durante le gare. Ma 2°, 3° o 1°, tutti questi migliori risultati sono molto difficili da raggiungere e per vincere un titolo mondiale tutto deve essere a favore durante l’anno, perché alla fine sono solo 1 o 2 manche che rendono campione del mondo o no.
RIW: Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per il 2015?
V.F.: Allenarmi molto, come nel 2014, migliorare il mio livello in acqua e rimanere in buona salute. Vorrei raggiungere l’ultima gara dell’anno con la possibilità di un titolo mondiale.
RIW: Quali sono attualmente i punti di forza e che punta a migliorare?
V.F.: Beh, penso che in generale il mio livello stia aumentando, specialmente nella conoscenza del waveriding e sia come esperienze di viaggi che mi permettono di stare molto tempo in luoghi che mi permettono di migliorare. Penso che in windsurf non si smetta mai di imparare e migliorare cose nuove, è per questo che lo amo così tanto.
RIW: Arrivare in cima alla classifica PWA richiede un sacco di lavoro, una complessa combinazione di fattori e un impegno che deve essere sempre maggiore. Oggi tu sei uno dei riders più forti e più costanti della Coppa del Mondo: quali sono le tue prospettive su un orizzonte temporale più lungo e quali sono i tuoi sogni finali?
V.F.: Il mio sogno era di fare il PWA Tour, poi di finire nei top 10 e poi di essere almeno 1 volta Campione del Mondo. Ho raggiunto questi sogni. Diventare campione del mondo ancora una volta sarà un vantaggio per me, ma non e’ un’ossessione.

When you have the good fortune to meet him in person his results are not the only ones hitting, but also his humility and solid serenity.
RIWmag joined him to draw with him the balance of 2014 and prospects for 2015.
RIW: Which was the more difficult moment of the 2014 season?
V.F.: 2014 was a great year for me, I think it was one of the best years since I´m on the PWA World Tour. May be the most difficult moment in 2014 was in La Torche as I was training there a lot before the competition so I want it to have a good result. I lost in quarter finals in a very close heat against Robby Swift where I sailed good ending the heat with a good double and a couple of wave rides but I was not happy enough and I knew that I was missing a bit on my wave riding. The rest of the season was great and I did my best so I´m happy in general.
RIW: Which was the more beautiful moment of the 2014 season?
V.F.: I think it was when I won Pozo Izquierdo for the 5th time in my career, also finishing top 4 in the PWA Aloha Classic.
RIW: In 2014 you were one of the favorite riders for winning the PWA wave title. Finally you got second. Since then you always spent positive words about this result. Didn’t you really feel any disappointment?
V.F.: I did feel a bit dissappoinment because I like to win as all the PWA riders, we train a lot to put our best moves during the competitions but 2nd 3rd or 1st, all of this top results are very difficult to reach and to win a World Title everything needs to be in your way during the year because at the end is just 1 or 2 heats that makes you world champion or not.
RIW: Which are your objectives for 2015?
V.F.: Train a lot as in 2014, raise my level in the water and stay healthy. I would like to reach the last competition of the year with chances for a World Title.
RIW: What are currently your strengths and which points to improve?
V.F.: Well, I think in general my level increase, specially the knowledge in wave riding as the experince of traveling and staying long time in the spots made me improve on that . I think in windsurfing I never stop learning and improving new things, that´s why I love it so much.
RIW: To get at the top of the PWA ranking requires a lot of work, a complex combinations of factors and a commitment which needs to be bigger and bigger. Today you are one of the strongest and most consistent riders of the World Cup: which are your perspectives on a longer time horizon and which your final dreams?
V.F.: My dream was to do the PWA Tour, then to finish top 10 and then to be at least 1x World Champion and I reach these dreams. Becoming world champion again will be a bonus for me but it´s not an obsession.
