Nel 2009 avevamo svolto un approfondimento su quale sia il comportamento necessario da tenere quando sullo stesso spot sono presenti sia windsurfers che kiters. Considerati i malumori e gli incidenti che ancora oggi occorrono riproniamo questo articolo augurandoci che la testimonianza di personaggi di spicco in entrambi gli sport possa far capire a entrambe le comunita’ quale sia lo spirito giusto per poter navigare serenamente insieme.

RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza per i kiters fuori dalle onde?
P.C.: Quando due riders si avvicinano l’un l’altro da mure diverse, il rider più sopravvento posiziona la propria ala a ore dodici in modo da lasciare passare il rider sottovento.
RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza per i kiters tra le onde?
P.C.: Quando si è tra le onde esattamente le stesse regole che si usano nel windsurf si applicano al kitesurfing. Chi si trova più sopravvento e più vicino al picco ha la priorità a meno che il rider sottovento sia arrivato prima sull’onda.
RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza fuori dalle onde per windsurfers e kiters?
P.C.: In generale è responsabilità del kiter di preoccuparsi dei windsurfisti siccome i loro cavi sono così lunghi. Si consiglia sempre, nel caso ci sia abbastanza spazio sottovento, che i kiters navighino sottovento ai windsurfers. Questo vale particolarmente per kiters principianti. Quando un kiter fa cadere la propria ala sull’acqua alcuni windsurfers potrebbero non vederne i cavi e finirci intrappolati.
RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza tra le onde per windsurfers e kiters?
P.C.: Molti spots hanno le loro regole a proposito delle precedenze tra kiters e windsurfers tra le onde. Per esempio ci sono onde su cui si da la priorità ai windsurfers (come a Hookipa) perchè ci si sono stabiliti prima dei kiters. Comunque in altri spots dove non ci sono regole locali le stesse regole che si usano nel windsurf si applicano e entrambi i windsurfers e i kiters. (come spiegato alla seconda domanda). In questo caso non c’è la priorità dei windsurfers o dei kiters. La precedenza viene data a chi si trova più sopravvento o è arrivato prima sull’onda.
RIW: Cose da fare e da evitare da parte dei windsurfers quando si trovano sull’acqua con kiters?
P.C.: Cose da fare: rispettare chiunque sull’acqua, siamo tutti uguali, nessun surfer o velista dovrebbe considerarsi superiore. Cercate di andare d’accordo nonostante le differenze tra tutti gli sport acquatici. Tenete gli occhi aperti mentre navigate sotto le ali dei kite. Cose da non fare: se ci si trova in una situazione in cui si vuole offrire assistenza aiutando o recuperando un kiter (a terra o sull’acqua) evitate di toccare i cavi. Se dovete afferrare l’ala prendetela per la camera d’aria del bordo di attacco vicino al centro dell’arco. Lì si può trovare anche la valvola della camera d’aria in caso si debba sgonfiare l’ala.
RIW: Cose da fare e da evitare da parte dei kiters quando si trovano sull’acqua con windsurfers? I kiters possono saltare molto in alto, volare per un lungo tratto e atterrare molti metri piu’ il la’. Tra il loro decollo e atterraggio potrebbero sopraggiungere dei windsurfers. Si sono gia’ avuti incidenti con attrezzature da windsurf danneggiate. Cosa potrebbero fare i kiters per evitare una simile situazione? Cosa potrebbero fare i windsurfers per evitare una simile situazione? Come comportarsi nel caso un incidente simile accada?
P.C.: Cose da fare: rispettare tutti indistintamente. Nessun surfer o velista dovrebbe considerare il proprio sport superiore. Cercate di andare d’accordo nonostante le differenze tra tutti gli sport acquatici. Cercate di navigare sottovento ai windsurfers se possibile.Tenete la vostra ala alta tutte le volte che un windsurfer vi passa sottovento. Evitate di saltare da sopravvento ai windsurfers ( o altri kiters). Il kite in aria ha uno spostamento in direzione sottovento molto importante! Usate sempre un leash. Mai staccarsi completamente dall’ala a meno di un’emergenza e in assenza di altre persone sottovento, che siano riders in acqua o passanti sulla spiaggia. Datevi lo spazio necessario per far partire e atterrare l’ala. Cose da non fare: non lasciate abbandonata l’ala o i cavi sulla spiaggia. Riavvolgete immediatamente i cavi dopo l’uso. Sgonfiate o bloccate l’ala con la sabbia. Non navigate troppo vicino ai surfers o windsurfers.

P.C.: When two riders are approaching each other from different tacks, the rider furthest upwind must put his /her kite to the 12 oclock position to let the downwind rider pass underneath.
RIW: What’s the “Right of way” just for kiters between waves?
P.C.: When it comes to priority on the wave, the exact same rules in windsurfing apply to kitesurfing. The person furthest upwind, closest to the peak has the priority unless the rider which is downwind was on the wave first.
RIW: What’s the “Right of way” outside waves between windsurfers and kiters?
P.C.: Generally it is the kitesurfer’s responsibility to look out for the windsurfers since we have much longer lines. It is always advised that if there is enough room downwind, the kitesurfers should generally try to stay downwind of the windsurfers. The is especially important with beginner kitesurfers. When a kitesurfer drops his / her kite onto the water, some windsurfers may not see the lines and can become tangled in them.
RIW: What’s the “Right of way” between waves between windsurfers and kiters?
P.C.: Many places have their own rules in place when it comes to kitesurfers and windsurfers in the waves. For example there are some waves which are given priority to the windsurfers (such as Hookipa) because they were established before the kitesurfing. However, in other places where there are no local rules, the standard windsurfing rules apply (same as point 2). In this case windsurfers or kitesurfers don’t have priority. Priority is given to whichever rider is furthest upwind, or was on the wave first.
RIW: Do’s and Don’ts for windsurfers when sailing with kiters?
P.C.: Do: Respect everyone on the water as equal. No surfer or sailor should consider their sport superior. Try to get along despite the differences in all of the water sports.
RIW: Keep your eyes open when sailing under the kite.
P.C.: Don’t: If you find yourself in a situation where you would like to assist, help or rescue a kitesurfer, (on land or in the water) avoid touching the flying lines. If you must contain the kite, grab onto the inflated leading edge of the kite near the center of the arc. Here you will also find the inflation valve if you must deflate the kite.
RIW: Do’s and Don’ts for kiters when sailing with windsurfers?
P.C.: Do: Respect everyone on the water as equal. No surfer or sailor should consider their sport superior. Try to get along despite the differences in all of the water sports. Do: Try to ride downwind of the windsurfers if possible. Do: Keep you kite high at all times when passing windsurfers who are downwind of you. Do: Avoid jumping upwind of windsurfers (or other kitesurfers). Kitesurfers travel very far downwind while airborne. Do: Always wear a leash. Do not ever disconnect fully from your kite unless it is an emergency and there are not riders, or beach goers downwind of you. Do: Give yourself a clear space to launch and land your kite.
Dont: Do not leave your kite or lines unattended on the beach. Wind your lines up immediately after use. Deflate or contain your kite with sand. Dont: Don’t ride too close to any surfer or windsurfer.
RIW: Kiters can jump very high, fly for a while and land many meters after. Between their take off and landing we could have windsurfers sailing in between. Accidents occurred already and the result was damaged windsurf gears. How could kiters avoid this? How could windsurfer avoid this? What to do if something similar happens?
