Dieter Van der Eyken, il forte freestyler belga (B35) sponsorizzato da Starboard, Severne Sails, Continent Seven, Black Project Fins e Brunotti Sportswear, ha trascorso una parte del sua allenamento invernale in Australia. Dopo aver vinto il titolo di Campione del Mondo Freestyle 2015, Dieter si sta allenando anche nel wave, pur rimanendo focalizzato sul freestyle. Gli abbiamo fatto alcune domande.
RIW: Ciao Dieter, quest’inverno, come gli ultimi anni, sei tornato in Australia. C’è qualcosa di magico in questo viaggio?
Dieter van Der Eyken: Per me è sempre il viaggio che aspetto con più eccitazione. Sono cresciuto andando in giro in camper con i miei genitori ed è per questo che amo andare in giro in un van rispetto a stare in una casa. Inoltre conosco la maggior parte dei locals adesso e l’atmosfera in spiaggia è super rilassata, quando sei in uno spot come Gnaraloo non devi nemmeno pensare di chudere il furgone visto che tutti conoscono tutti. Questo non succede in tutti gli spot, vedi Cape Town …
RIW: Abbiamo visto molto wave nel tuo ultimo video, quali sono i tuoi obiettivi nel Wave Tour?
DVDE: In Australia il mio obiettivo era di allenarmi nelle onde, visto che sapevo che sarei andato a Bonaire per allenarmi in freestyle. Sono contento di aver raggiunto i top16 (wave) l’anno scorso ma vorrei costruire qualcosa oltre questo risultato in questa stagione, magari raggiungendo i top12, ma dipende dalle condizioni che troveremo.. Maui probabilmente sarà un evento valido per tutti quest’anno e con i livello dei local non è molto facile ottenere un buon risultato lì.
RIW: Ora ti stai allenando a Bonaire, preparandoti per i prossimi eventi. Il livello è altissimo, sei pronto a lottare per le prime posizioni? Su quali manovre di stai concentrando?
DVDE: Il livello è incredibile al momento in Freestyle ma purtroppo il numero di eventi non sta seguendo questo trend. Sto lavorando principalmente sulle manovre doppie su entrambe le mura e cercando di imparare la double airculo ma vedremo … Le previsioni sono buone e io voglio prima di tutto divertirmi con tutti i riders qui e insieme spingerci a migliorare il nostro livello.
RIW: Hai fatto alcune clinics, quali sono le sensazioni in queste attività? Hai pianificato qualcosa per quest’anno?
DVDE: Mi piace molto fare clinics e aiutare le persone a raggiungere più velocemente il loro livello successivo nel windsurf. Molto probabilmente farò un’altra clinic a Tenerife a giugno e magari alcune altre man mano che l’anno evolve, con le date delle gare che escono abbastanza tardi è dura pianificare tutto in anticipo, il che è un problema visto che le persone hanno bisogno di pianificare le vacanze in anticipo … Sicuramente cercerò di crescere con queste attività in futuro.

Dieter Van der Eyken, the strong Belgian freestyler (B35) sponsorized by Starboard, Severne Sails, Continent Seven, Black Project Fins e Brunotti Sportswear, spent a part of his winter training in Australia.
After the win of the world title Freestyle in 2015, Dieter is training in the waves, altough his focus is still on freestyle. We asked him some questions.
RIW: Hello Dieter, this winter you went back to Australia as in the last few years. Is there something magical in that place?
Dieter van Der Eyken: For me it’s the trip where I always look forward to the most, I grew up traveling by camper with my parents and because of this I love to travel by van rather than staying in a house. Also I know most locals there now and the vibe on the beach is just super relaxed, when your in a place like Gnaraloo you don’t even have to think about closing your van when you go sailing as everyone knows everyone, not something you can do in places like CT …
RIW: We saw a lot of wave-sailing in your last video, which are your plans for the Wave Tour?
DVDE: In australia my main focus was to train in the waves, as I knew I still was going to Bonaire to train for Freestyle. I’m happy to reach the top 16 (wave) last year but I would like to build on this towards next season with hopefully a top 12 results on the overall but this all depends on the conditions we get … As Maui will probably be a counting event for everyone this year and with the local level there it isn’t really easy to get a top result there.
RIW: Now you’re training in Bonaire, getting ready for the freestyle events. The level is getting crazy, are you ready to fight for the top positions? Which moves are you training on?
DVDE: The level is pretty insane at the moment in Freestyle but sadly enough the amount of events aren’t following this trend. I will mainly work on the double pop moves on both side’s and try to get the double airculo in the reperatoir but will see. The forecast is good and most of all I want to have fun with all the riders here and together push or level!
RIW: You did some clinics, what are the feelings in doing such activity? Have you planned something for this year?
DVDE: I really like doing clinic’s and help people get quicker to their next level in windsurfing. I will most likely do a clinic again in Tenerife in June and hopefully do some more as the year evolves but with the tour dates coming out quite late its quite hard to plan it far enough in advance, which is a bit a problem as people need to plan their holiday far enough in advance … But defiantly will try to grow in that further in the future.
