Julien Mas: Ciao RIWmag!

RIWmag reached Julien Mas (JP, Gun Sails, Nine Ink) in Bonaire. The French freestyler is training for the 2017 season but is also working on two projects that bring innovation in the world of windsurfing: the livescoring to evolve the freestyle races jury and surfsnb, a platform for buying and selling windsurfing equipment. Here is the interview.
RIW: Hi Julien, tell us about your winter training. How are you getting ready for the upcoming season and which are your goals?
Julien Mas: Hi RIWmag! Well, after some time without sailing, I finally rip the water again. I’m now in Bonaire for 3 month and I will be windsurfing, stand up paddling, diving, and generally getting in shape to be on top on my skills! You know there are only 2 PWA events this season and this doesn’t make so much sense to me … but anyway I keep on training and make sure I will have a lot of fun while sailing, more than ever this year!
RIW: You changed your sail sponsor to Gun Sails, what are your feelings? Which sail do you mostly use?
J.M.: Yes! I’m now riding the Yeah from Gun Sail. It’s really nice to see this brand moving more and more towards freestyle! Usually in Bonaire I used to sail most of the time with 5.2 … but the Yeah are so powerful, that most of the time I’m using 4.8 and 4.4 as soon as Windguru becomes red .
RIW: You’re the mind behind the live scoring system. Tell us some details over it, what’s the main concept?
J.M.: Actually, we are 2 brains behind the live scoring system. I am working with my associate Danny Kater on this project in the last 3 years now. I would say that the main concept is to get the possibility for the riders and for the public to follow a heat, to understand when and why the rider win or lose the competition, and to give the possibility to the judges to really focus on the heat and not anymore on the paper. To make it easier, we split the judgement in 2 parts: one guy is there only to write the name of the move which was performed (that’s the “writer”), the other judges only have to give a score from 1 to 5+ to value the execution and style of the move. Finally, the system calculates automatically the final score.
RIW: Are you planning an upgrade of the system?
J.M.: Hum … for the moment we are working on another project. But as soon as we have time we will for sure upgrade it again. The system is never finished and we want to keep improving a lot.
RIW: You’re working on another project right now, Surf Sell and Buy (https://surfsnb.com/). Can you explain us what is it?
J.M.: Surfsnb is a platform where you can sell and buy water sport gear related to surfing easily and with a secure payment. This platform allows you to store your gear as if you were running a shop and visitors can easily and quickly search and find the product they wish to purchase. The purchases and sales that are made on the site are entirely guided, allowing to sell and buy all over Europe without the language becoming a barrier. For the moment, the platform is running in French and English, but during the next 5 month we will have it also in Italian and German!
RIW: What are your goals with these projects?
J.M.: Our goals for this project is to make the process of buying and selling surfgear more easy for every rider. As a windsurfer, I know how difficult it is to sell gear and sometime you have no time to put your stuff on all the blogs or Facebook groups or to answer 10 time the same question (“is it possible to ship?”, “is there water in the board”). On Surfsnb we have space for public questions, so people can ask what they want and also read previous questions. Usually, one of the most difficult parts of a buying/ selling process of Windsurf gear is the shipment. In future, we would like to associate to our platform an easy delivery system in Europe. For now, we try to make it really simple and practical for the user. Once you are interested in a product, it’s not necessary to ask if it’s possible or not to ship the product to your country: you just need to make a “request to buy” and the seller will automatically receive all your necessary info concerning the shipment (city, country). This request doesn’t mean that you necessary need to buy. You can cancel the request at any moment.
