Dalla fredda Russia alla calda Dahab, questa la fortuna windsurfistica di Kostya Smirnov, classe 1998, giovane freestyler intervistato da RIWmag in questa puntata e di cui molto probabilmente si sentira’ parlare ancora.
Kostya ha partecipato all’ EfpKids Tour 2013 di Marsiglia classificandosi terzo.

RIW: Hai detto che vivi a Dahab , che età avevi quando ti sei trasferito in Egitto?
K.S.: Mi sono trasferito con la famiglia quando avevo 5 anni (nel 2003). I miei genitori volevano fare una vacanza e il viaggio per andare a Dahab non era molto costoso. Quindi, dopo essere arrivati si sono resi conto che potevamo stare a vivere per un periodo più lungo. Tutto è cominciato così …. mio padre ha trovato lavoro e io ho iniziato ad andare a scuola.
RIW: Quindi vai spesso anche in Russia. Cosa ti piace di quel paese?
K.S.: Di solito trascorro la mia estate in Russia (3-4 mesi) e a volte vado anche durante l’inverno per fare gli esami. La Russia mi piace in tutto, eccetto per l’acqua fredda. In estate in Russia mi piace visitare dei posti che Dahab non ha. Inoltre mi piace la sua vegetazione e la natura (boschi e praterie). In Egitto mancano queste cose.
RIW: Come hai iniziato con il windsurf?
K.S.: Quando avevo sette anni ho guardato I primi windsurfers a Dahab. Mi sono detto che avrei dovuto provarci, poi mi è piaciuto e ho incominciato ad interessarmi a questo sport. Fortunatamente nel centro sportivo in cui sono andato avevano attrezzatura per bambini e istruttori da cui imparare.
RIW: Parlaci del tuo local spot e………. com’è questa famosa blue lagoon?
K.S.: Dahab è diventata famosa dopo il 2000, ed ha iniziato ad attrarre non solo windsurfers, ma anche kite surfers, subacquei etc. I miei spots sono qui: la Lagoon stessa dove trascorro la maggior parte del tempo in acqua; The Kamikaze zone dove si possono trovare delle onde, oltre ad alcuni altri spots tutto intorno alla città come El Assalah e Light house. A me piace il mio spot perché tutto è vicino; ci impiego solo 15 minuti per raggiungerlo.
La famosa blue lagoon? – Sembra una leggenda, ma io ci sono stato una volta e conosco le sue condizioni. Lì Il vento è più forte che a Dahab e non è rafficato; l’acqua è piatta come uno specchio. Cosa dire – condizioni paradisiache. . Tuttavia, la blue lagoon è identica a Dahab ma presenta acque meno profonde e un vento migliore. Anche il posto è ancora abbastanza selvaggio, ancora poco frequentato dall’uomo, il che gli conferisce una particolare atmosfera.
RIW: Dahab è visitata da tanti famosi pro riders, quali sono quelli che incontri più spesso nel tuo spot?
K.S.: Si, I pro riders vengono qui a volte, soprattutto in inverno. Vedo spesso Yegor Popretinskiy (Rus 11), a volte anche Steven Van Broeckhoven (B-72) viene a farci visita; Andy “Bubble” Chambers (K-540) viene tutti gli anni. Anche Gollito Estredo (V-01) è venuto qui per girare il film Four dimensions. Sono tutti tra i top 15. Fare windsurf con loro è divertente e anche molto utile.
RIW: Chi ti ha ispirato nel windsurf?
K.S.: La mia vita, l’acqua, il vento, la natura. Tutti quelli che surfano meglio di me. Lo sport stesso è molto divertente, se non il più divertente di tutti. Tu, con la vela e la tavola, planando in mare molto al largo, facendo bei salti alti e manovre. Non è abbastanza per essere ispirati?
RIW: Come riesci ad organizzare gli studi e gli allenamenti?
K.S.: È difficile ma riesco ad organizzarmi. Sto imparando il russo e l’alfabeto arabo allo stesso tempo. Qui in Egitto non ci sono scuole russe, ma ci sono insegnanti privati, per cui non c’è bisogno di una scuola. Con gli insegnanti privati puoi organizzare meglio le tue giornate, in modo da avere il tempo per allenarti.
Per esempio, tutti I giorni durante la sera studio per 4 ore + 2,5 ore di compiti e un’ora di lezione di inglese. In tutto fanno sette ore al giorno. Sicuramente quindi riesco a trovare 2 ore al giorno per surfare.
Ogni semestre faccio il test scolastico sia in Russia che in Egitto.
RIW: Quali sono I tuoi punti di forza e di debolezza?
K.S.: Di forza: non fare troppe manovre dalla stessa mura. Di debolezza: alcune manovre non sono eseguite perfettamente.
RIW: Cosa fai quando non sei in acqua?
K.S.: Quando non c’è vento vado a nuotare, a pescare o a fare wakeboard. A volte mi piace fare escursioni in montagna.
RIW: Qual’è il miglior spot che conosci?
K.S.: Blue Lagoon, El Tur. Mi piace surfare anche ad Assalah. Dahab quando il vento è più forte e c’è l’alta marea. (le onde Side shore rompono sui coralli).
RIW: Dove ti piacerebbe andare a surfare?
K.S.: Alle isole Hawaii per le famose condizioni di onda e vento. In Vietnam per il clima e la vita economica. In Sudafrica per le enormi onde e le condizioni radicali che attraggono i malati di vento. Tenerife per migliorare. E poi in giro per il mondo alla ricerca di nuovi posti per il windsurf.
RIW: Come vedi il tuo futuro nel windsurf?
K.S.: Ci penso sempre. Forse aprirò un mio surf center, forse farò un nuovo brand. L’unica cosa di cui sono sicuro è che il windsurf sarà con me per sempre.

Where do you live: I live in Dahab (Egypt) for most of the year, but also 4 months I spend in Russia.
What is your favorite discipline: Freestyle, and sometimes slalom.
What are your best moves: Airflaka, Ponch, SW Kono, Toad.

RIW: You told that you are living in Dahab, how old were you when you moved to Egypt?
K.S.: I moved here with my family when I was 5 years old (in 2003). My parents wanted to have a vacation; unfortunately, Dahab was not so expensive to come. Then after they came here, they realized that we could try to live here for a longer period. Like this, it all started… My dad got a work here. I started to go to school.
RIW: Do you go often to Russia? What do you like about that country?
K.S.: Normally I spend my summer in Russia (3 -4 month) and sometimes I go there in winter to do my exams. Russia is good in all, except the cold weather. In summer, I like to visit some places, which Dahab does not have. In addition, I love its vegetation and nature (green forests, grasslands) and Egypt lacks of those.
RIW: How did you get into windsurfing?
K.S.: When I was seven, I watched the first windsurfers in Dahab. I said I will try it, but then I loved it and I was interested in this activity. Thanks to my sports center, they had the gear for kids and instructors to learn from.
RIW: Tell me about your local spot. What about the famous blue lagoon?
K.S.: Dahab became famous after 2000, which attracted not only windsurfers, and kite surfers, divers, free divers, etc. My spots are here: Lagoon itself, where I spend most of my time on water, The Kamikaze zone (for some waves session) and some more around the city like El Assalah and light house. I like my spot because everything is near; takes me 15 minutes to get there.
The famous blue lagoon? – Sounds like a legend, but I have been there one time and I know its conditions. The wind there is stronger than Dahabs, not gusty; Water is flat like a mirror. What to say – heavenly conditions. However, the blue lagoon is identical to Dahabs, but it has shallow waters and better wind. Also the place is still quite wild, still unharmed by humans, overall which makes it soulful.
RIW: Dahab is visited by famous athletes, which are the ones you see most often in the spot?
K.S.: Yes, pro riders come here sometimes, especially in winter. Often I see Yegor Popretinskiy (Rus 11), sometimes Steven Van Broeckhoven (B-72) visits us, Andy “Bubble” Chambers (K-540) comes here every year. Even I remember Jose Golito Estredo (V-01) came here to film the four dimensions movie. Everybody are in top 15 above, surfing with them is fun and insightful.
RIW: Who has inspired you in windsurfing?
K.S.: My life, water, wind, nature. Everybody who windsurfs better than I do. The sport itself is very entertaining if not the most entertaining. You, with your sail & board, cruising very away in the sea, jumping high, making tricks. Isn’t that enough to be inspired?
RIW: How do you manage to keep up with studies and training?
K.S.: It is hard, but I managed it. I am learning the Russian and Arabic syllabus in one time. Here in Egypt there is no Russian schools, but there are private teachers, which give knowledge not worth than a school. You can plan your daytime better, with private teachers, and that gives you some time to train on water.
For example, every day in the evening I am having 4 hours of studying, + 2, 5 hours homework, and a English lesson for an hour. All in sum takes about 7 hours a day. For sure, I am able to find 2 hours daily on windsurfing.
Every semester I am doing a test in Russia and here too.
RIW: Which are your strong and weak points in the water?
K.S.: First – Not doing many tricks on the same side. Second, some elements I make are not consistent.
RIW: What is your life out of the water?
K.S.: Well, having school in the evening always. In non-windy days going swimming, fishing or wakeboarding. Sometimes I go out wandering in the mountains.
RIW: What is the best spot where you surfed?
K.S.: Blue Lagoon, El Tur. Also I like surfing in Assalah, Dahab when the wind is strong and high tided water (Side shore waves braking on corals).
RIW: Where you would go for windsurfing?
K.S.: -The Hawaii islands – very famous waves conditions + consistent wind. – Vietnam – nice weather and cheap life. -Cape Town, South Africa – Huge waves and hardcore conditions attract every wind-related human. -Tenerife Island, Spain – Not very hard conditions, where you can learn to go big. – And travel around the world, exploring & finding new spots to windsurf.
RIW: How do you see your future in windsurfing?
K.S.: I am still thinking about it: May be to open my own surf center, may be to make a new brand for it. The only thing I know is that it will be with me forever.
