Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, NorthSails, ION, MFC, Shamal Sunglasses, Almerimar / ElEjido) è il waverider PWA più costante già da diversi anni. Ha ottenuto il suo primo titolo mondiale nel 2010 ed è rispettato da tutti, non solo per le sue doti windsurfistiche, ma anche per la sua gentilezza e cortesia: Victor è uno di quei rider che può avvicinarsi a chiunque non comportandosi in modo diverso per via della sua carriera professionale. E’ stato vicino al suo secondo titolo mondiale già diverse altre volte negli ultimi anni e, durante questa 99NoveNove Aloha Classic 2016, lo ha finalmente ottenuto. RIWmag lo ha raggiunto per un parlare di questo grande risultato!
RIW: Ola Victor! Come stai? Come ti senti ora che hai il tuo secondo titolo del mondo in tasca?
Victor Fernandez: Mi sento davvero felice. E’davvero difficile ottenere un titolo mondiale e dopo la mia prima volta nel 2010, sei anni dopo ho ottenuto il secondo; è incredibile per me.
RIW: Negli ultimi anni sei stato più volte molto prossimo al tuo secondo titolo. Quale pensi che siano state le differenze tra la stagione 2016 (in cui hai ottenuto il titolo) e quelle precedenti?
V.F .: Gli altri anni sono stato molto vicino al titolo, ho perso a pari punti o per una posizione. Sono stato vice campione del mondo per 5 volte. Questa stagione ho iniziato con 2 vittorie in Gran Canaria e a Tenerife e un buon 4° posto sull’isola di Sylt, quindi penso che questa sia stata la chiave per un titolo del Mondo, essere stato costante in tutti i tipi di condizioni e arrivare all’ultimo evento dell’anno con buone possibilità di poter vincere.
RIW: Negli ultimi anni ci sono state diverse discussioni sugli eventi Wave PWA che sono principalmente mure a sinistra onshore. Da un lato non è facile per il PWA trovare nuove destinazioni che possano soddisfare tutti i requisiti necessari, dall’altro esistono riders avvantaggiati o svantaggiati da questa situazione. Qual è la sua posizione?
V.F .: Credo che negli ultimi 3 anni abbiamo avuto un buon tour con 6 differenti eventi e Maui come ultimo evento, cio’ lo rende molto diverso rispetto agli anni precedenti. A mio parere avremmo bisogno solo di un evento mure a dritta in cui anche i salti diano punteggio e un evento mure a sinistra con condizioni down the line: questo sarebbe il tour wave dei sogni, ma in questo momento è già un buon tour e il livello di tutti i rider è incredibile.
RIW: Hookipa è un posto speciale dove ogni anno il ranking PWA ottiene più o meno un’inversione. Perché c’è così grande differenza nelle performance e tu come ti trovi lì?
V.F .: Sì, miglioro di anno in anno ad Hookipa perché spendo quattro mesi invernali a Maui, quindi mi alleno molto qui e acquisto molta confidenza con l’onda. La differenza qui è che ci sono molti ottimi specialisti di quest’onda e solo la surfata conta per il punteggio, ciò rende le heat molto più combattute rispetto agli altri eventi. Anche la maggior parte dei riders con esperienza qui hanno più consapevolezza su quali onde surfare e questo è qualcosa che si impara solo se si sta qui per un lungo periodo di tempo.
RIW: Chi desideri ringraziare per questo risultato?
V.F .: Voglio ringraziare la mia famiglia, gli amici, gli allenatori, i miei fans e i miei sponsor (Fanatic, North Sails, ION, Almerimar/ElEjido, Shamal Sunglasses e MFC) per avermi supportato durante tutto l’anno sia quando ho vinto sia quando non lo ho fatto.
RIW: Quali sono ora i tuoi piani e progetti per i prossimi mesi e la prossima stagione?
V.F .: Rimanere a Maui, testare nuove vele per North Sails e continuare a migliorare per la prossima stagione.

Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, NorthSails, ION, MFC, Shamal Sunglasses, Almerimar/ElEjido) is the most consistent PWA wave rider since already several years.
He got his first world title in 2010 and he is respected by everybody not only for his windsurf skills but also for his kindness and politeness: Victor is one of those rider who can approach anybody as he doesn’t behave differently because of his professional career.
He was close to his second world title already several times in the last years and at this 99NoveNove Aloha Classic 2016 he finally got it. RIWmag joined him for a talk about this great result!
RIW: Ola Victor! How are you? How do you feel now that you have your second world title in the pocket?
Victor Fernandez: I feel really happy. It´s really hard to get a World Title and after my 1st one in 2010 six years later I have the 2nd so it´s amazing for me.
RIW: In the last years you have been closed already several times to your second world title. Which you think were the differences between the 2016 season (when you got it) and the previous ones?
V.F.: The other years I was really close as well as I lost on equal points or by 1 place. I´ve been Vice World Champion 5 times. This season I started with 2 victories in Gran Canaria & Tenerife and a good 4th place on Sylt so I think this was the key for a World title, being consistent in all kind of conditions and get into the last event of the year with good chances for it.
RIW: In the last years there were several discussions about the PWA wave events which are mainly on onshore port tack conditions. On one side it is not easy for the PWA to find new destinations which can fulfill all needed requirements, on the other hand there are riders which are advantaged or disadvantaged by this situation. What is your position about this discussion?
V.F.: I think in the last 3 years we had a good tour with 6 different events and Maui as the last event which makes it very different than years before. In my opinion we would need just 1 more starboard tack jumping event and 1 down the line portack event and this would be the dream wave tour but right now it´s already a good tour and the level is incredible from all the riders.
RIW: Hookipa is a special spot where every year the PWA raking gets more or less upside down. Why is there so huge difference in the performance and how do you feel there?
V.F.: Yes, I feel better and better every year at Hookipa as I spend the last 4 winters on Maui so I train a lot here and I got more confidence in this wave. The difference here is that there are many good specialist only on this spot and only wave riding counts so it makes every heat more tight compere to the other events. Also the most experience riders here have more knowledge about which wave to take and this is something that you learn only being here for a long time.
