Nel 2009 avevamo svolto un approfondimento su quale sia il comportamento necessario da tenere quando sullo stesso spot sono presenti sia windsurfers che kiters. Considerati i malumori e gli incidenti che ancora oggi occorrono riproniamo questo articolo augurandoci che la testimonianza di personaggi di spicco in entrambi gli sport possa far capire a entrambe le comunita’ quale sia lo spirito giusto per poter navigare serenamente insieme.

RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza per i kiters fuori dalle onde?
R.N.: Se non ci sono onde allora si applicano le normali regole di navigazione, quindi chi si trova mure a dritta ha diritto di precedenza. Chi si trova sopravvento dovrebbe tenere la sua ala più alta e chi si trova sottovento più bassa. Troppi kiters navigano con le ali alte.
RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza per i kiters tra le onde?
R.N.: Tra le onde chi va verso l’onda ha la precedenza ma, di nuovo, chi sta sopravvento deve tenere l’ala più in alto.
RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza fuori dalle onde per windsurfers e kiters?
R.N.: Teoricamente si applicano le stesse regole per tutti i tipi di imbarcazione a vela … chi è mure a dritta ha la precedenza. Qui comunque kiters e windsurfers generalmente non escono negli stessi spots … cerchiamo di tenerli separati con i kiters sottovento ai windsurfers.
RIW: Quali sono le regole di precedenza tra le onde per windsurfers e kiters?
R.N.: Kiters and windsurfers non dovrebbero davvero trovarsi tra le stesse onde. Quando questo succede, alle Hawaii i windsurfers hanno la precedenza. Se si è tra amici allora kiters e windsurfers seguono le stesse regole: il primo sull’onda si prende l’onda, chi è sopravvento ha la priorità ecc. Comunque non è un gran bel mix … quello di mettere kiters e windsurfers sullo stesso spot. I kiters devono solo fare attenzione a lasciare abbastanza spazio ai windsufers e rendere comprensibile dove vogliono andare.
RIW: Cose da fare e da evitare da parte dei windsurfers quando si trovano sull’acqua con kiters?
R.N.: Osservarli e imparare a prevedere dove vanno ecc. Cercate di passare sopravvento quando possibile.
RIW: Cose da fare e da evitare da parte dei kiters quando si trovano sull’acqua con windsurfers?
R.N.: Siate gentili, fa davvero paura essere sull’acqua con i kiters … specialmente quando non sono molto bravi. A me piace navigare con amici che sanno quello che fanno, ma può fare davvero paura essere sull’acqua con kiters principianti che non sono così bravi come pensano, e navigano senza preoccuparsi di chi è attorno a loro. Siate semplicemente cool e prudenti e non fate cadere la vostra ala.
RIW: I kiters possono saltare molto in alto, volare per un lungo tratto e atterrare molti metri piu’ il la’. Tra il loro decollo e atterraggio potrebbero sopraggiungere dei windsurfers. Si sono gia’ avuti incidenti con attrezzature da windsurf danneggiate. Cosa potrebbero fare i kiters per evitare una simile situazione? Cosa potrebbero fare i windsurfers per evitare una simile situazione? Come comportarsi nel caso un incidente simile accada?
R.N.: I kiters devono fare attenzione a dove vanno. Questo è una delle principali ragioni per cui, specialmente tra le onde, è meglio separare i kiters dai windsurfers. I kiters sanno cosa aspettarsi dagli altri kiters. Ma se non sei un kiter è difficile da capire … fa davvero paura. In quanto kiter bisogna semplicemente rispettare gli altri ragazzi sull’acqua … anche gli altri kiters (e specialmente i surfers). Navigate in modo intelligente e tutto va bene. Alla fine della giornata, sia che tu sia uscito in surf, windsurf o kite, l’importante è essere cool e fare attenzione a chi ci sta attorno. Inoltre siate disponibili e non siate egoisti di onde … un kiter può prendere tutto … lasciate qualche onda, condividete, sorridete, non siate intransigenti, le normali regole della vita, fuori e dentro l’acqua.

RIW: What’s the “Right of way” just for kiters outside waves?
R.N.: If there is no surf, then sailing rules normally apply, so that the guy on Starboard tack (right hand forward) has the right of way. A guy upwind should keep his kite above and a guy down wind should keep his kite low. Too many kiters ride around with their kites straight up in the air.
RIW: What’s the “Right of way” just for kiters between waves?
R.N.: In the surf, the guy coming in on a wave normally has to right of way. but again, the upwind kite stays high.
RIW: What’s the “Right of way” outside waves between windsurfers and kiters?
R.N.: Theorheticaly the same rules as for all sailing vessels of any kind…. starboard tack has right of way. Here, however, kiters and windsurfers normally do not ride in the same spots…. we try to keep them seperated with the kites down wind of the windsurfers.
RIW: What’s the “Right of way” between waves between windsurfers and kiters?
R.N.: Kites and windsurfers shouldn’t really be in the same waves. when they are, windsurfers have the rights here in Hawaii. If it is all friends, then the kites and windsurfers play by the same rules,; first on the wave gets the wave… upwind guy has priority etc. It is not a great mix though,,,, putting kites and windsurfers in the same spot. You just have to be careful on the kite and give the windsurfers room and make it clear where you are going. • Do’s and Don’ts for windsurfers when sailing with kiters? Watch them and learn to predict where they are going etc. Try to pass on the upwind side of the kite when possible.
RIW: Do’s and Don’ts for kiters when sailing with windsurfers?
R.N.: Be courteous. It is very intimidating to be in the water with kiters…. especially when they are not very good. I love to ride with friends that know what they are doing, but it can be very scary to be in the water with kook kiters that are not as good as they think, and are riding with no regard for the guys around them. Just be cool and safe, and don’t drop your kite.
RIW: Kiters can jump very high, fly for a while and land many meters after. Between their take off and landing we could have windsurfers sailing in between. Accidents occurred already and the result was damaged windsurf gears. How could kiters avoid this? How could windsurfer avoid this? What to do if something similar happens?
R.N.: Kiters have to pay attention to where they are going. This is one of the main reasons why, especially in waves, it is best to keep a bit of a separation between kites and windsurfers. Kites know what to expect from other kites. If you don’t kite, it is hard to understand where everything is going etc… it is very intimidating. as a kiter, you just have to respect the other guys in the water… also the other kites. (and especially surfers) Ride smart, and all is good. At the end of the day, whether you are surfing, windsurfing, or kiting, you just have to be cool, and pay attention to the guys around you. Also be cool and do not be a wave-hog. a kite can take everything… let some waves to by. Share. Smile. Don’t be a dick. Normal rules in life, on and off the water.
